Some days I feel like I get nothing done. Like today. I spent the entire day working on designing an antibody panel for some flow cytometry (for those of you who don't know what that means, imagine
So I have decided to entirely ignore the chronologic nature of my life, and skip over Spring Break/General Conference. Don't worry, I'll go back to those sometime, just not today.
Instead I will introduce the girlies.
After Hoshi died Carlin and I thought about trying all kinds of different pets. I personally really wanted to go the cat route, but Carlin said no because of the increased pet rent.
We also thought about a hedgehog, degu, dog (well I thought of a dog), hamster, ferret, and guinea pig. BUT, we decided to go with the more intelligent pet route.
We got two beautiful rats. No joke.
I love them to death! And I have to say that I think Carlin does too even though he was hesitant before we got them.
They are adorable. They are sisters, and look very much alike, except for a slight difference in how dark they are. And a HUGE difference in personalities.
When we first got them they had to live in Hoshi's old cage, which wasn't big enough for them at all. One was always running around and eager to check out the whole world, and the other was always timid and slightly afraid. We chose names based on their personalities.
The darker one who was always out to look around and willing to sniff around and run around on any surface trying to see what the world was like as a whole we named Loco-pops. It worked because she was honestly a little bit crazy, energetic, curious, and willing to explore anything (including diving down Carlin's collar and running around inside his shirt). Her name over time has gotten abbreviated, and went from Loco, to Doco, so sometimes we call her Doco, or Docopops instead. I think it's a great name, and fits her pretty well overall. They were honestly both nameless for about two weeks until we could figure out names that would work for them.
The lighter-brown rat we had a harder time naming. We couldn't come up with a perfect name for the longest time. In the small cage she was timid and didn't really want to explore much. You kinda had to bribe her to come out to play using food, or a pouch she could
So after we established good and fitting names I decided that the girls needed a cage that had enough space for them. There were a few options, but unsurprisingly I went with the biggest option possible. This cage is 5 ft tall, and MASSIVE. And the girls love it.
Irony of irony though, in the new cage it was as if the girls switched personalities.
Now it's Sophie that is the crazy explorer, and Doco that's more normal-seeming. Sophie loves to use the bars on the cage to climb around, and if we leave the door open within a couple minutes she'll be climbing up and down and all around on the outside of the cage, while Doco is more moderate in her scampering/climbing around on/in the cage.
However, Doco is definitely the more friendly of the two still. They'll both ride along on your shoulder and sit there if you put them there, but Doco will actually willing climb onto your shoulder to go around with you if you stand next to the cage long enough.
I think they're both great though.
I love how cute they look in the morning too when they huddle together in their cage and sleep. I'm super-glad we got two rather than one, because I think they get less lonely that way. Especially because I'm pretty sure the cage is big enough for 11 rats, and 1 would be lonely.
So these are the new kiddos in our family!!
Spring break update and General conference post to come!
